Basics of Blog Optimisation for Search Engines

Blogs offer increased opportunities to enhance your SEO program.

You should treat every blog post as a “landing page” in its own right. (The definition of a landing page – also called “entry page” is a web page that is focused on a specific topic or written for a target audience and serves as a destination page – or point of entry page - for search engine traffic).

You need to apply best practice optimisation techniques to every blog post. Listed below are the main areas to focus on. Try and hit as many of these as possible in each blog posting.

  • Include your primary keywords in your blog’s name. (This is not the blog title but the actual name of the blog itself).  This is important because many of your inbound links will use the name of your blog within the linking text, so this will provide a rankings boost.

  • Include a tag line or other permanent text describing your blog on your website's home page. (We are still talking blog name not individual blog titles). The reason for doing this is because your blog home page content will (should!) be constantly changing so a basic and constant description of your blog will provide consistent text for the spiders to index.

  • Write blog posting titles that describe the content of the post. Make sure they form a complete “thought” – but be concise. You need to do this because often this title will be displayed as the clickable link on blog search engines (rather than the html titles in the tags)

  • Include a compelling “teaser” or summary of the post in the first line of each posting. The reason for doing this is that often this text is used as the descriptive text in blog search engines or feed readers.

  • Include your target keywords in your posting title. Clearly the article is being written to promote your SEO program and therefore use of the keywords is very important. The keywords will also be bolded in the title and the snippet that appears online – thus making your blog post more likely to catch the eye.

Have a look at your last 3 blog posts – how do they stack up against these points?  Be honest now…!
